By Terrence Hill, Esq.
I have big shoes to fill.
One year ago, I was inaugurated as president-elect of the TJ Reddick Bar Association, second in line to President Antonya Johnson, a talented associate at The Arias Law Group. Generally, my job was to fill in when needed, though I did have certain assigned responsibilities: overseeing specific subcommittees, as well as assisting in the organization the recent June 21st gala at which I transitioned from president-elect to president.
As president of TJ Reddick, my plan is to follow in Antonya’s footsteps, while creating my own footprint with a few new goals:
- Increase the number of scholarships we award to deserving law students;
- Promote our organization within the non-legal businesses community while increasing visibility among law firms and members of the legal community;
- Incorporate mentoring and volunteering opportunities within the organization; and
- Actively inform the public on political candidates and issues while encouraging members of the local community to vote.
This past year has been an incredibly busy, but productive one. TJ Reddick sponsored Thanksgiving for disadvantaged children, received a grant from the Florida Bar to fund the “Pathways to Becoming A Lawyer” event for local high school students, hosted dinner for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, participated in the Koyzak Minority Mentoring Picnic, sponsored Christmas for a local indigent family, co-hosted a Judicial Nomination Committee forum, participated in the Legal Aid Hotline, co-hosted “Being a Lawyer and Changing the World” at Nova Law, co-sponsored the Young Lawyers Black History Luncheon, and volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County.
On my own, I have become involved with the Council for Educational Change, through the lawyers alliance program whose mission is to encourage students to pursue higher education. Right now the agency’s efforts are concentrated in Miami-Dade County and my plan is to help expand its outreach to Broward.
I am fortunate to have the support of all the TJ Reddick members as well as the partners, associates and staff of Goldstein Law Group, who came to the gala in full force to wish me success. And I am confident that, together with my colleagues, I will fill those ‘big shoes.”
